Hello new members! Welcome to The Spring Parents of Children with ADHD Meetup. I'm Leslie - mother of a 3 1/2 daughter and a 7 y/o son with ADHD. My son was diagnosed in Nov. 2007. I'm still learning all about ADHD. Every day with my son is an adventure. I never know what will happen - sometimes good things and occasionally not so good things. My son attends public elementary school. He is very bright (a great reader when he will sit down and try to read a book) and inquisitive - I love those things about him.
We are working with him on his social skills. We have seen some rejection from other kids his age in the neighborhood - painful to watch. He is about two years behind other seven year olds when it comes to maturity. We are trying to teach him to say hello, look the other person in the eye and find out what they like to do - not just what my son wants to do, control his temper, don't whine. He has a narrow range of interests - he's not very interested in sports which is okay but we are trying to teach him how to throw a Frisbee or play a little basketball. He is a great swimmer and a master on the razor scooter - (he received one for his 7th birthday in March). Working with my son takes a great deal of time and patience. He has a very loving and forgiving little sister who is always his friend. We are fortunate to have found a great play therapist and child psy for him. I think he has made progress since he was diagnosed. We still face challenges like when he visits a friend's house, restaurant or store (something we don't do much with him anymore because he will often have a meltdown if he doesn't get something he wants). I learned to ignore the stares of strangers - something that used to bother me quite a bit. He requires constant monitoring, vigilance and patience, patience, patience! I'm looking forward to hearing from other parents with ADHD children. I'd like to know how you handle social situations, visits to friends, restuarants, stores and other public places and how having a sibling with ADHD affects the other children in your family. Welcome to the board. I'm looking forward to learning from others. |

I also have a son with ADHD. He was diagnosed in May 2007 although we suspected it for a few years before then. I have very similar issues with him; social, maturity, whining, sitting still, etc... We are also in the Klein district. I am looking forward to meeting you and others who have children with ADHD. Thanks for setting this meeting up. :)
